Joe Biden makes history by keeping his foot out of his mouth

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I’ve never been a big fan of Joe Biden, but I liked his speech tonight. I think the key statement, the one that should be remembered, was this:

When I look at [Obama's] young children, when I look at my grandchildren, I know why I’m here. I’m here for their future.

Even to someone like me, who doesn’t have children, that statement resonates. Parents here teach their kids to plan for the future, yet our nation has never done it. No one was thinking of me 30 years ago. They were thinking only of the present. I’d like it if someone today thought of the 59-year-old me and the kids I may have.

I’d like healthcare that doesn’t cost half my rent. I’d like my parents to be able to retire. I’d like a job market that has actual jobs in it. I’d like our government to invest fully in renewable energy, not because of some “save the Earth” hippie bullshit, but to create a new national industry where Americans do the work instead of outsourcing it. Biden strikes me as someone who wants these same things, and he’s got my full support.

    Amen, my friend.

  2. jojo says:

I’m just waiting for the Hillary backers to come to your site and fill your comment section with posts on how she should be VP or she got screwed, or it was all rigged because she’s a she.

  3. Tony says:

If this is what he’s promising what the fuck has he been doing in the Senate for the last 36 years then? Politicians suck. It’s just packaging.

  4. Paul says:

In the Senate, he wouldn’t have nearly as much clout as he would in the White House. The Dems have shown that they’re very serious about universal healthcare and environmental causes, so it’s not just packaging.

  5. 8berse6 says:

They were also very serious about stopping the war in Iraq, but here we are today, with a Democrat majority in congress with them still giving Bush money to spend on the war effort.

  6. Dennis says:

The Democrats do not have enough votes in the Senate to stop the Republicans from blocking legislation to stop the war. You need 60 solid votes to push measures through. And when you have a president who will veto anything meaningful, that doesn’t help either. Stop blaming Democrats for “not doing anything” when their hands are tied to begin with. Having a one vote majority doesn’t get things to happen.

  7. 8berse6 says:

I’m not saying stop the war, I’m saying they need to stop giving Bush money since Bush has to petition congress to get it. Don’t fuck with me Dennis, I know what I’m talking about!
