Captain Oblivious strikes again

original print date, June 26 2003

...................Paul Ryan

Last week, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty - or as I like to call him, Captain Oblivious - guaranteed Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad that he would do everything in his power to get a new stadium bill passed. Pawlenty also said he would make sure the Minnesota Vikings get the facilities they need.

This is the same governor who refused to raise taxes to ease the burden on our state deficit, causing programs for battered women and mentally challenged kids to lose major funding. But apparently, Pawlenty is fine with raising taxes to pay for sports stadiums.

Irony's not dead. It just found a permanent home in the Minnesota Legislature.

Don't get me wrong; it's not that I don't like the Twins. In fact, I'm a big Twins fan. Always have been. But the Metrodome - where the Twins and Vikings play - opened in 1982, and still serves the needs of our sports teams well. It has plenty of seats for fans, is great for our erratic weather, and is only 21 years old.

While I agree that an outdoor stadium would be great, I don't agree with demolishing a perfectly good stadium and charging the taxpayers up the butt simply because Pohlad wants a few more luxury boxes. Especially when it contradicts everything else he's done during his term.

Taxpayer: Hey Captain Oblivious, didn't Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad say the main reason for needing a new stadium was because they didn't have enough luxury boxes?

Tim Pawlenty: Um, uh . . . I don't really know the . . . um . . .

Taxpayer: Hey Captain Oblivious, wouldn't more luxury boxes just mean more money for Carl Pohlad, instead of more money to fuel our economy? Isn't his threatening to move the team if he doesn't get a new stadium - one that isn't needed - a form of blackmail?

Tim Pawlenty: Um, uh . . . I don't really know the . . . um . . .

Taxpayer: Hey Captain Oblivious, since history has shown that a new stadium only brings increased attendance for the first year or two, and takes many more years to pay off, wouldn't it be a bad idea to give in to his demands?

Tim Pawlenty: Um, uh . . . I don't really know the . . . um . . .

Taxpayer: Hey Captain Oblivious, throughout your tenure as governor, you're been pretty terrible at answering specific questions posed by the media and the public. Is that because you don't really know anything, and just pull all your ideas out of your ass without researching them first?

Tim Pawlenty: It was great visiting with you all! I can't wait until I can come back to . . . whatever town this is! Ha ha! Remember, the budget went great this year! No, really! It went great!

Seriously, the Twins have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. If Pohlad isn't making money in some way, then he's dumber than Pawlenty.
