Cubs fans are whiners![]() ...................Paul Ryan
Tuesday night was the perfect example. In the eighth inning, Cubs outfielder Moises Alou tried to jump into the stands to catch a foul ball, but lost it because a Cubs fan, Steve Bartman, tried to catch it as a souvenir. Bartman, a 26-year-old Cubs fan, had to be escorted from the stadium by security guards because fans were throwing bottles at him. No one threw bottles at Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who screwed up a grounder that could have been an easy double play to end the inning. His error could very well have been the true turning point in the game. No one threw bottles at Cubs pitcher Mark Prior, who gave up five runs in the eighth inning, or Cubs pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, who replaced Prior and gave up three more runs in the inning. Cubs fans weren't interested in the truth: that it was the team's fault. They were more interested in finding a scapegoat so they could whine about "the curse of the baseball gods" and fate. Even the Associated Press in Chicago couldn't resist going along with the mob mentality with lines like, "It was almost as if the baseball gods realized these were the Chicago Cubs. Those lovable losers blew it again thanks in part to -- of all things -- one of their own fans." Of course, the AP writer went into detail about how it wasn't really Bartman's fault, but not until the nineteenth paragraph of the story. Who reads the nineteenth paragraph of a story in the sports section? The truth is, Bartman didn't reach onto the field. He was clearly in the stands. None of the fans in the section saw Alou coming to catch the ball, so Bartman put his hands out to catch it. Anyone who says they would have done differently is a liar. I was rooting extra hard for the Cubs last night, not because I think their fans deserve the win, but because a win meant Bartman would be rightly spared from a life of living hell. Even Fark.com labeled poor Bartman as a "dumbass" and "idiot Cubs fan". Unfortunately, the Cubs lost and the Florida Marlins are moving on to the world series, so Bartman will live on as yet another curse for the sappy, pathetic Cubs fans. Cry me a river. If you want a team that wins, maybe you should drop all the bull about "the curse" and "lovable losers" and actually give your team some respect. I love the Cubs, Wrigley Field, and especially the thought of underdogs winning it all. But frankly, I don't think Cubs fans really deserved the world series berth. I realize 58 years without a world series and 95 years without a championship can make people bitter and outrageous, but Cubs fans are just pathetic.
Frankly, the treatment of Bartman by Cubs fans was reason enough for the Cubs to lose. Good riddance.
