Online DVD rental service comparison

original print date, August 6 2004

                Paul Ryan

One of the coolest things about the Internet is the ability to rent DVD's and video games online. You pay a monthly fee, select movies and add them to an online list, and your top three are sent to you with prepaid return envelopes. There's no shipping charges and no late fees. You can return a movie whenever you want, and they'll send you another one. I end up watching 8-12 movies a month. It's a great way to see movies I probably never would have bothered watching if I were renting in a video store.

I've been renting DVD's online for about two years. Most people I talk to are overwhelmed by the thought of renting DVD's online, but it's really simple and fun. I have the answers to everyone's questions right here. Which rental service should you choose? How much will it cost? What does it look like, and is there someone to help you if you have trouble?

I've put together a chart of all the different online DVD rental services, comparing and contrasting every little detail. I signed up for all the free trial periods I could find, and put together a wealth of good information on everything from features to customer service quality. So now instead of spending hours searching through the different websites for the information you want, you can just look at my research.

It includes a "quick reference" chart, for those of you who don't want a lot of details, plus a heavily detailed comparison chart with full explanations for everything. Below the detailed chart are short reviews of each online DVD rental service. If you have questions, post them in the comments section here. And be sure to come back for Saturday's column, when I add online video game rental services to the mix.

Paul, you did an excellent job on writing about online DVD rentals. I could't of said it any better.
