Three times weekly Ramblings, not daily

original print date, September 6 2004

                Paul Ryan

Effective immediately, I will only be writing three columns a week for this website instead of five. So the title, "Daily Ramblings", will become somewhat ironic. Wednesday Music Spotlight and Daily Ramblings Express will remain the same.

Why am I choosing to scale back? Well, to put it plainly, I'm exhausted. As most of you know, I hold a full-time newspaper job and spend most of my free time creating content for this website. I have maintained this rigorous schedule over the years partly because I'm a dweeb, but also for other reasons which no longer apply. The fact that they no longer apply is my reason for scaling back.

When I started Daily Ramblings two and a half years ago, I had two goals. The first, and most important, was to improve my humor writing. I feel I've succeeded in that area, and if you were to read through all 600+ columns from the last 2.5 years, I think you'd agree I've become more dependable, quality-wise. At first, my columns were a bit bland and rushed. In time, they followed a more hot and cold pattern of success. As I learned how to bypass writer's block and improve my ability to quickly create an idea and develop it, the columns improved. Looking over the last year, I'd stand behind the quality of every column.

Well, except the Anus Chronicles column I wrote. That was just wrong. But I stand by all the other ones.

My second goal didn't pop into my head until later, and it was a longshot anyway. Maintaining the daily column schedule this long in hopes of someday being able to support myself financially with the website was pure stupidity. The chances of that happening are one in a million, and it's not going to happen with this kind of content. The Internet is a place for ADD kids and lazy adults like me, not people who like to read lengthy columns.

Websites like Achewood.com, Penny-Arcade.com, and OddTodd.com were all made by regular people, and became a source of sustainable income for them, but these websites all have something Daily Ramblings never will: quick and attractive content. Most people surfing the Internet don't have the patience for 500-word columns. People reading a newspaper have the attention span for them, but no newspaper that pays its columnists would actually allow the kind of content I write.

So as you can see, I'm at a dead end in that area. I can't provide quick comic strips and flash movies that can be read in 30 seconds, and I don't want to. So what's the use of killing myself every week writing non-stop content? By writing three columns a week, I can satisfy readers while giving myself more free time as well. It's a logical solution for both sides.

By scaling back, I can also have time to explore other areas of writing. I don't think I'm "selling out" or "being lazy" with this decision. I think I'm doing what's best. I hope all of you feel the same way. See you Wednesday.

Hopefully you're using your new found free-time to start working on your "National Steve Guttenberg Day" party. After all, it is only 23 days away.

I've always been amazed that there was a fresh column waiting for me every morning. You've kept up a helluva schedule, and you deserve to have some more free time. Keep up the good work, man!!
